My (Bad) NFL Playoff Picks: An Explanation

Today, I was a loser. Really. I announced my picks to win in this weekend’s NFL Playoff matchups earlier this afternoon, and today I came up empty. The bad thing is I’m 0-2 this so far weekend and my track record for picking big games (Auburn vs. Alabama, SEC Championship, Sugar Bowl, NCAA Football National Championship). The good thing is I’ve realized the problem: I’m picking mostly with my heart, not my brain.

You see, I picked the Ravens to beat the Steelers, Falcons to beat the Packers, Patriots over the Jets, and Bears over the Seahawks. The Ravens signed my friend and former teammate James Hardy to a future contract earlier this week, Ray Lewis is one of my all-time favorite players, and I just love to watch Ray Rice. I ignored to recognize the fact that Ben Roethlisberger has won two Super Bowls and is much better than Joe Flacco. I also chose to turn from the Steelers greater ability to make big plays. I should’ve listened to Colin Cowherd earlier in the week when he talked about the teams who made more explosive plays (runs over 15 yards or more, passes of 25 or more) did better in the playoffs.

The same was the case for the Falcons. My former college running back coach, Gerald Brown, is now the running back coach for the Falcons, and I love Michael Turner in the Falcons’ running game. I should’ve recognized Aaron Rodgers’ greatness and the Packers’ big play ability. Silly me.

I’m hoping tomorrow goes much better for me. I mean, a .500 record for the weekend isn’t so bad is it?

Yelawolf, Slaughterhouse Get Shady

After much deliberation, Slaughterhouse has joined Shady Records and Interscope Records. There were rumored problems in getting member, Joel Ortiz cleared from Koch Records, but the deal was worked out. The group has already recorded with Eminem in Detroit, which is good news for fans anxious to hear their new material.

Alabama-bred rapper, Yelawolf, who was already signed with Interscope Records, which released his most recent mixtape Trunk Muzik 0-60, has made the in-house move to sign with Eminem’s Shady Records as well.

The new signees along with Eminem appear on the cover of XXL’s February issue.

XXL has released these quotes:
Eminem: Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse, it’s kinda phase two of Shady. It’s the new generation of Shady Records and as we’re trying to rebuild our label, it’s exciting for hip-hop and with all of these forces coming together and with what everybody’s capable of on the mic, it’s gonna be fun.”

Yelawolf: “Considering where I’m from and the shit I’ve been through, it’s hard to put into words what partnering with Shady means to me, my team at Ghet-O-Vision, and my state of Alabama. I can tell you that when you’re willing to give your life up to see a dream through, the reward is great. Nike doesn't make good commercials - they make great ones. And this one featuring Lebron James is one of the best they've EVER done. It's spot on and very affective. It's Lebron playing the villain and owning it. It's him saying, "I'm going to be who I want to be and I don't care what you think." I absolutely love it. Sure, there's subtle shots at Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, but Lebron is doing one of the things that makes leaders great - not doing what's popular and being his own man. If he did what everybody else - the people outside his inner circle - wanted him to he'd be a follower. And being a follower isn't bad if you follow diligently, but why follow when you're in a position to lead? You can't. And Lebron won't.

My Jacket of Dreams: The Shawl Collar Dinner Jacket

In many ways the Shawl Collar Dinner Jacket is what I aspire to be. It’s elegant, sophisticated, luxurious, and most of all, it’s so grown up. For about a year now, the shawl collar blazer has been on my “to buy” list. Really, it should be on my “you better buy that shit once you’ve made it” list, but can you blame me? I mean, look at it. When you wear one it says something. It’s a statement all its own. It’s the classic “you can’t tell me nothing” jacket.

Most recently, the jacket has caught my interest because Kanye West rocked it in his movie Runaway, which aired last Saturday. While he is my number one inspiration when it comes to anything creative, the jacket stays on my mind like a beanie in the winter time.

The jacket dates back to the 1860’s, when Henry Pool & Co. designed a short smoking jacket for the Prince of Wales to wear to informal dinner parties as an alternative to white tie dress. It didn’t receive the name “dinner jacket” until 1888.

While many are two-button versions, my favorite is the one-button design. The one shown (above and below) is the Band of Outsiders Shawl Collar Dinner Jacket said to be priced at $1,824. It’s hand tailored, made with natural cotton canvas, and features front flap pockets, back side vents, and functional buttons at the wrist. I love how you can dress up the jacket or dress it down. Ideally, I want one like the Band of Outsiders version here, and one in light gray with a black shawl collar. I’ll own them one day. Then, when I walk by people will fantasize and think, “Damn, that boy made it.”

Can A Brotha Get A Phoenix? (Or just Kanye and Miss Ebanks)

Kanye West's long talked about 35-minute short-movie “Runaway” (below) premiered on MTV, MTV2, and BET Saturday night. In the movie a phoenix (played by model Selita Ebanks) falls to earth, crashing Kanye’s car. He, then, takes her to his home, falls in love with her, and tries to help her adapt to this world in hopes she’ll be accepted by humans, but she is not. It features nine songs off Kanye’s upcoming album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, to be released November 22. While the film was packed with creative, awe-inspiring scenes featuring lively colors, interesting shots, and amazing cinematography, the one thing you couldn’t take your eyes off of was model Ms. Ebanks.

Basically naked with feathers covering her privates and wings on her back, Ebanks looks like a bird – a sexy bird. She doesn’t speak much but she doesn’t have to. She stole the movie just by standing there. According to my twitter feed, I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t take my eyes off her. In case you missed it, peep the photos of Ebanks and you’ll see what I mean. If all birds looked like this, I’d house an aviary.

Morning Video: G.O.O.D. Music BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher

Incase you missed last night's BET Hip Hop Awards, different groups of rappers entered the cypher (a crew of rappers rapping in a room, basically) and all went hard. There were five in all featuring the star veterans like Kanye West, Common, Raekwon, Rev Run, and Ice Cube as well as up and comers like Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, Tyga, Yelawolf, and Diggy and JoJo Simmons (Rev Run's kids). All of them were dope, but my favorite was (you guessed it) Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music cypher featuring Kanye, Common, Pusha T, Big Sean, and CyHi Da Prynce. Kanye spit first and last killing it with his signature introspective, boastful, and thoughtful flow, but the most surprising came from Big Sean. He flowed with such ease and he looked like a true pro ready for the flashing lights. I got excited. After you see this, you will, too. Run it back!

The 22-year-old Virginia native became the latest addition to the Saturday Night Live cast on September 25, making him the first African-American addition since 2003, when Keenan Thompson arrived. He's made a name for himself by impersonating celebrities like Jay-Z, Drake, President Obama, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, and others. The J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League is a group of producers you must know if you're into hip-hop. But, just in case you're not they consist of three producers (Erik "Rook" Ortiz, Kevin "Colione" Crowe, Kenny "Barto" Bartolomei) based in Tampa, FL. They took home a Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2007 for their work on Mary J. Blige's album "The Breakthrough". They've also crafted hits for Lil' Wayne, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Drake, and Fabolous among many others. This video shows their work on Rick Ross's summer banger "Aston Martin Music" featuring Drake and Chrisette Michele. The track was quite possibly the single of the summer. See how it all went down.

The moment I first heard this track in my SUV I just shook my head with the beat knowing it was going to be a hit. Lil’ Wayne’s verse is slow, but thorough, and it’s done so well it’s quite possibly one of my favorite verses of his (I always have the words “No love lost, no love found” in my head). Dude even appears in the video, which is just a bad-ass, surprising moment if you ask me. Eminem spits hot fire all over this song just like he does on the rest of his album Recovery. I like how the video is dark and more toned down than ostentatious and the storyline is pretty cool. Bottom line, bullies suck.

Leave it to Kanye West to bring me out of my blogging slumber. I sat and watched the MTV Video Music Awards last night in my apartment in Pennsylvania apartment. Kanye performed his new song called "Runaway" with The Clipse's Pusha T. His performance was so simplistic, yet so memorable. I enjoyed every second (evident by my rants and "shouting" on Twitter). He recently filmed mini movie he's made, titled "Runaway" for the new single. It has a dark vibe to it, but not 808's and Heartbreak dark. The teaser was shown at last night's show and I haven't been able to get it off my mind sense. Peep the 49-second trailer below.

The Lebron Effect

I’m not sure where to begin about Lebron James’ decision and all the hoopla of last night. So, I’ll just jump right into it. I don’t want to break down why him going to Miami is a good or bad thing because there’s so much else that went on last night and there will be plenty of time for player talk. But, for the record, I was surprised he chose Miami, but I’m still excited he did.

I spent much of the day functioning while checking my Twitter feed on my blackberry. The outrage of so many for Lebron having an hour special was enormous, yet ridiculous. People came at me about how “Lebron thinks he’s bigger than the game”, “He’s going about this all wrong”, “He’s a quitter”, “I have no respect for him”. And on and on.

First of all, Lebron decided an hour special was good idea to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club charities. Secondly, he has never said anything about being bigger than the game. He’s only said and demonstrated the opposite. He’s the ultimate distributor on and off the court.

People said he went for the money. Not true. He left $30 million plus on the table by not signing with Cleveland. He’s preached TEAM all along and said that he wants to win. Period. Some say he’s big headed and has a big ego. If that were true he wouldn’t go to a team where it was unclear who the best player was (a number one trending topic on Twitter was people were calling him the new Scottie Pippen). If he was all about himself and being the man, he would’ve gone elsewhere to be the clear number one guy. He didn’t do that. He thanked Cleveland for everything they’d done for them. He explained he was sorry he couldn’t bring them a championship. He didn’t even react when his jersey was being burned. Some said he quit on his team in the playoffs. Since when is having bad games quitting? He looks for his teammates, his shot may be off at times, hell, he may even get tired at times. None of that is quitting. It’s part of the game. So what is there not to like about the guy? You tell me.

Following Lebron’s decision, Cavs owner Dan Gilbert lost his mind when he wrote a public letter to the fans. Instead of telling you what he said, I’ll let you read it for yourself.

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

Classless . That’s the first word that comes to mind. He’s the owner, but he sounds like a bum at some bar in Cleveland. He’s way out line. Gilbert gave a lot of talk about loyalty. Mike Brown had the best NBA record for two years straight. He was fired. Where’s the loyalty there?
Players are consistently blind-sided by trades every year. They find out while on cruises, from the ESPN ticker, from fans, etc. People complain all day about how players need to be loyal and not chase the money. If that’s the case, the front office needs to be held to the same standard. They fire people and chase money all the time.

Dan Gilbert must learn one thing: Fans, especially in Cleveland, are fickle. They’ll show up if you’re good, they won’t if you’re bad. So, there’s absolutely no need for him to be spouting off to all the fans about how he thinks Lebron is disloyal a narcissist, and a coward. The fans can’t win games. Players do. Last night Dan Gilbert killed himself in the player/agent world. If I’m an NBA player or agent I’m in no hurry to ever discuss anything with him. No deals, no money, trades, and especially not free agency.

That’s another thing that Gilbert lost sight of in all this. Lebron was a free agent. That means he’s free to work wherever he wants! He’s earned that right. He owes nothing to Dan Gilbert or to Cleveland for that matter. He’s lived and played there for years. He entered a business where you use your body to make your living. Making as much money as possible is important because you could be cut, traded, or released at any moment. It’s a business. Also, it’s not like Lebron said ‘I hate the city the city and am never coming back.’ He made the best decision for him and his family – the decision that makes him happiest. Shouldn’t we all be doing that in our lives? Why criticize someone for doing so? It makes no sense. He obviously still loves Cleveland. It’s his home, but he just chose to work somewhere else. Cleveland fans will survive.

Kanye West's Horus Chain

Kanye West made his triumphant return from exile by opening the BET Awards on June 27 with his new single, "Power". While he rocked his performance on top of a faux mountain rapping to everyone down below, I couldn't help but notice the huge chain hanging from his neck. All of us Kanye fans have grown accustomed to the Jesus piece he consistently wore. But this was no Jesus piece.

It was a "Horus" chain custom made for him by the often hip-hop name-dropped "Jacob the Jeweler". According to mythology, a Horus is the ancient Egyptian god of the sun, son or borther of Osiris and Isis, represented as having the head of a hawk. Horus means "the high-flying one."

According to multiple websites, the chain costs a reportedly $300,000. I'm wondering if Kanye will rock the chain elsewhere or if it was just for the performance. Either way, I'm elated to see him back. Word is, his album, titled Good Ass Job, drops September 14th.

Mad Men. Nice Style.

I've only watched Mad Men in passing. I know, I know. Big mistake on my part. While I may be late in becoming a regular viewer of the show, I've always admired the style. GQ and Esquire fell in love with the look, therefore, so did I. I've even adopted it with a couple of dark, tailored suites, crisp white shirts, and the famous straight, white pocket square. Word is the outfits have been slightly toned down for the season 4 premiering July 25.

If my roommate and I decide to get cable I will be watching it. Although I'm not sure I'll know what's going on, as I'll be drooling over Christina Hendricks.

Meet Uffie. Hot Mama with a Hot Album.

I was browsing through the iTunes store last week sampling new music when I came across a unique sound of electro hip-hop/pop from an artist who I found to be sexy, but one I'd never heard of. Who was this artist? Her name is Uffie.

I listened to the 30-second snippet of all 17 tracks on her studio debut album Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans (released June 11) and was really impressed. She sounds like an artist who won't sell a hell of a lot, but she'll garner a strong niche audience. I'm also betting she probably puts on one hell of a concert.

Born in Miami, raised in Hong Kong, and living in Paris, Uffie is a sassy young thing who raps tough lyrics over auto-tuned, synthy beats. The media have already compared her sound to Ke$ha. Uffie was recently interviewed by Complex magazine where she addressed that issue along with tattoos, hickeys, and guns. It turns out she's a 22-year-old divorcee and just had a daughter. But, before you say "Yikes!", know that this sexy mama still loves to party and her music reflects it. I have yet to buy her album, but I will soon. So, count me in that special niche. And yes, I think she's better than Ke$ha.

Designer Spotlight: Kelly Framel

What comes to mind when you think of jewelry, Texas, and fashion? Probably gaudy cuff links, pins, and topaz pendants. But rising jewelry designer/stylist/blogger Kelly Framel goes against the norm.

A native of Austin, Texas and graduate of the fashion school at the University of Texas in Austin, the 26-year-old Framel's style resembles very little of her Texan roots. She mixes styles from the 1920's through 1970's, loves a garcon look, caftans, chiffons, and vibrant prints. Her blog, theglamourai.blogspot.com shows off her personal style and sartorial prowess.

I've long admired Framel without really knowing anything about her. I saw a picture of her on a fashion blog over a year ago and it stopped me in my tracks. She was stunning, sexy, hip, and chic. She's an "it" girl. You can't take your eyes off her. She came to mind yesterday as I equated her looks to a friend of mine (and yes, she's stunning, too.)

Among others, Framel has worked for designer Naeem Khan, known for his impeccably cut dresses, gowns, and chic embroidery all done by hand. His long list of celebrity clientele include Beyonce, Eva Longoria, Michelle Obama, Elizabeth Taylor, and Queen Noor of Jordan.

Framel recently released her capsule jewelry collection for Shrimpton Couture. An assembly of avant-garde pieces with an elegant DIY spirit, she's designed something for every woman.

With her jewelry embodying her cool, chic, ambitious, free-spirited lifestyle it's safe to say she should be on your next shopping and gift-list. Even if her jewelry roots are from Texas.

Jay-Z Brings Out Kanye West at Isle of Wight Festival

Jay-Z headlined the Isle of Wight Festival in the UK last weekend. During his set he brought out a special guest - Kanye West. West has slowly but surely been easing his way back into the spotlight. Two weeks ago he released his the first single titled, "Power" off of his upcoming album Good Ass Job due out in September. He's also performing at the BET Awards on June 27. Watch as Mr. West shocks the crowd and prove that the best way to be forgiven is to rock a show.

The Infamous (and awkward) Kobe Bryant Press Confrence

You're sure sportswriters everywhere just love to interview Kobe Bryant, right? Wrong. The best player in the NBA is also the worst interview in the NBA - in press conferences anyway. A journalism friend of mine sent me a link to this video full of Kobe's press conference highlights. The Lakers star has it down to a science. Simply, give a series of one-word answers, cliches, sarcastic laughs, and rub your face when annoyed and wallah! You've successfully mastered the worst press conference interview ever.

I know Kobe does speak more in some interviews, but his lack of printable answers in press conferences is ridiculous at times. My dad thinks he speaks less in pressers because he doesn't want to give any bulletin board material. That may be true, but I think Kobe's easily bothered by lots of questions. As a former athlete, I know the feeling (although nowhere near to the same extent). If the Lakers win Game 7 of the NBA Finals against the Celtics tomorrow night, I'm sure Kobe will have plenty more to say... I hope.

My Three Favorite Tracks: "Light Up", "Fireworks", "Over"

What does it mean to keep it real? In hip-hop keeping it real has often meant keeping your eye to the streets or “the game” from which you come from - to display a reality to many who know nothing of the sort.

Drake redefines what it means to keep it real. On his debut album Thank Me Later the Canadian actor turned rap phenom doesn’t rap about the streets, clubbing, or thug life. He raps about emotion and proves that a rapper doesn’t have to be hard all the time to keep it real. Like his famed mixtape So Far Gone, he’s vulnerable, meditative, and honest. He shifts hip-hop from the streets to modern introspection for everyone to hear and even relate to. A concept first explored in 2008 by Kanye West’s 808’s and Heartbreak, and later followed by Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon, Drake consistently displays the ability to make you feel something.

Part of what separates Drake from others is, despite his subsistent fame, his style makes him touchable. In contrast, listen to Jay-Z or his mentor, Lil’ Wayne. They’re lyrics, style, and personas make them untouchable and difficult to relate to. Drake speaks to most. He’s afraid, still seeks fame, and is humbled by it. He hurts, feels, and reflects in a refreshing way that’s further enhanced by his solid, nasally tone and tight flow.

The album’s first single, “Over” hits you with a surprising hook that speaks to young people wanting to live the life and be successful. It’s a triumphant opening single, solidifying his ascendance to hip-hop celebrity status. The second single, “Find Your Love” is closer to the rest of the album, which is a distant, misty fog full of harmonious tones and wavy synthesizers, and a trance of 808 drums. Even up-tempo tracks “Fancy”, “Unforgettable”, and “Miss Me” fade into a foggy coda.

The subdued Drake shines as it is in those moments when we are invited into the depths of Drake’s mind and flow. Few artists are able to display such a sense of restraint while giving you so much. Drake consistently takes strong chances with long verses, shocking beats, unique jerky hooks, and personal lyrics. His trademark variations in vocal levels create a different feel to every verse, which is something rarely heard. Songs like “Fireworks” and “Shut It Down” linger but their melodic tones capture you like an arresting symphony.

Thank Me Later features cameos from heavy-hitters Alicia Keys, T.I., Swizz Beats, The Dream, Young Jeezy, Nicki Minaj, and Jay-Z. However, the only truly memorable verse was delivered by Jay-Z on “Light Up”. Drake succeeds in not being outdone on his own album.

Many will call Drake’s debut average partially due to its hype, but upon a further look, Thank Me Later is complete - meant to be heard from start to finish. It has no wasted tracks and each song complements the other. It reads like a story book, ending with “Thank Me Now” – a triumphant, boastful finale with an infectious beat. Drake pulls off being himself and telling his stories. They’re stories better than most our own. They’re stories that make keeping it real realer than you knew it could get.

I bought my first Common CD last week, which is inexcusable. He is one of the best rappers to ever touch a mic and his political and societal-conscious lyrics are second to none. For some reason I never bought his CD's. My official intro into the Common world was serviced by his Finding Forever CD, released in July of 2007. I've been a fan of Common ever since he released his single "Retrospect For Life" featuring Lauryn Hill back in the early '90's. Now, I'm on a mission to get every CD he's released. His latest release was the techno-funk inspired Universal Mind Control released in December 2008. And word is he's currently working on his next one possibly due out later this year or early next.

Why the greatest racer in the country isn't in the Indy 500

The two most dominant drivers in the country won’t be racing in the Indianapolis 500 tomorrow. They might not even be in attendance. Race fans will debate over who will take the checkered flag this year. Will Helio repeat? Or how about Danica? Scott Dixon maybe? While hundreds of thousands will gather in Indy to witness speed at its greatest on its biggest stage the future of racing lies in two kids who are years from being able to drive legally.

Who are these whippersnappers, you ask? Meet Santino Ferruci, an 11 year-old from Woodbury, Connecticut with the racing smarts of a seasoned veteran and swagger to back up every one of his towering trophies, and Jack Miller Jr., a confident and fearless six year-old from Westfield, Indiana who’s been racing since age four and has never been beaten.

Music Videos That Move You...Or Make You Move

Music videos are one of my favorite art forms besides the music itself. I feel videos are in a really good place right now, especially with summer upon us. The storylines are unique and/or haven’t been seen in a while, particularly in hip-hop and R&B. Even the ones that aren’t so creative have elements of excitement in them. I’ve decided to feature six of my current favorites from Drake, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Usher, Diddy, and Ciara along with my thoughts afterwords. Listen to them, let them move you, or make you move… even if you can’t quite move like Ciara. And ladies, I know you’re going to go home and try. Enjoy.

Drake – “Find Your Love”

First of all, “Find Your Love” is quite a risk for Drake. Why? Well, it’s produced by Kanye West (not a risk), but it has more of a somber 808’s and Heartbreak feel more than raw hip-hop like his previous single “Over”. Nevertheless, Drake hits this one out the park, meaning the risk was worth it.

As for the video itself, I think the idea and storyline is great. I saw a very funny tweet on Twitter the other day about this video. It read, “Let Drake’s ‘Find Your Love’ be a lesson to you all. Don’t ever chase a girl to Jamaica and dutty wine with her in the club. She will kill you.”

Hilarious.

Alicia Keys - “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready)”

Beautiful song. The video is emotional and touches on a subject that absurdly still bothers some today: Interracial love. I love how the settings switch back and forth between point of views times and the emotion of the actors feels real. Great song, even better video.

Mary J. Blige f/ Trey Songz – “We Got Hood Love”

The queen of R&B is sharper than ever. This song is classic Mary, yet the tune is so modern and new. I really like the plot of the video, it touches on the one thing that will make or break a relationship: trust. Waiting on their men to come home, wondering if he’s out doing dirt, is a feeling many women everywhere are all too familiar with. This video shows it well. If you’ve got that “hood love” you’ll withstand anything.

Usher f/ Will.i.am – “OMG”

Autotune is not dead (sorry Jigga) and neither are drop-crotch pants (I wish they were). Usher rocked this Will.i.am produced track and showed out in the video with his signature dance moves and smooth R&B look. I can’t say there’s much creativity in this video, but I like the song and I enjoy watching Usher dance… and peep the red pocket square with the white blazer. I will be stealing that look.

Diddy: Dirty Money f/ Rick Ross & T.I. – “Hello Good Morning”

Nothing creative or new about this video. Everything is done on a large scale just how Diddy likes, I can dig it. I like Dirty Money’s look and the song makes me wanna dance.

Jay-Z Performances on SNL

Saturday night I stayed in and took in some SNL. I haven't been keeping up with the show lately but I decided to take interest this weekend because Betty White was hosting and Jay-Z performed. It was probably the best non-election SNL I've ever seen. All of the skits were great and Betty White was hilarious. while I'm not posting any skits, below I've posted Jay-Z's performances. The Roc was definitely in the building!

I bet you're wondering who the girl was singing with Jay-Z on "Empire State of Mind". Her name is Bridget Kelly (or B.K.). She may look like an Alicia Keys stunt double, but B.K. is a true force to be reckoned with. The 22-year-old NYC native was recently signed to Jay's Roc Nation label. Many won't like this, but I like her voice on the song better than I do Alicia Keys. I actually heard her live at a Jay-Z concert in Indy in March. Kelly is also easy on the eyes (I think I'm in love). Follow her on Twitter and search for her videos on Youtube. She's a budding star and is bound to capture the hearts many outside the Empire State, too.

New York Observations Part II

I'm back in good 'ol Indiana but I still have more observations to spill.

Men in New York are always popping their collars - even on their suit jackets! I was somewhat surprised by this, but I did like it. On my last day in the city I decided to pop mine as well. Although, I was wearing a Nautica shirt where underneath the collar were the words "Nautica". Therefore, it needed to be shown.

Walking on Broadway in Soho is like attending a fashion show - or 20 of them. I saw so many different styles there. It was amazing. Big shades, bold leggings, jagged hemlines, cropped pants, crazy hairdo's, bold tank tops, sequins, feathers, big handbags, boots of all kinds, suits, ties, flannels, etc. I could go on and on. As my style continues to evolve, I'll fit right in.

'The Espy II" at ESPN Zone on 4 Times Square is the best alcoholic drink I've ever tasted. Although, it was $10 a glass.

The Subway system seems intimidating if you've never used it. I know I was worried about it. But once I actually got over my worry and fear, I found it to be quite easy. Now, I did get lost trying to get to Soho and somehow ended up in Brooklyn ( I really liked BK, too), but I recovered and by the end of the week I was good. If you're ever in New York and you're not sure how to get around just go to hopstop.com. It's the mapquest for the subways/buses.

With that being said, I can see why same people are willing to pay more in order to live in the city, closer to work instead of going cheaper by living on the outskirts. I'd consider doing the same.

Times Square is all that you see on TV and more. Billboards are HUGE and everything is just on a grand scale. It's almost ridiculous, but I love it.

Nothing is weird in New York. I mean nothing. You an be you no matter how weird you think you may be and people will appreciate it.

The only grass I saw in the city was at Bryant Park. And it's beautiful. I'd get married in that park.

New York Observations: Part 1

There are lots of "it" girls in NYC but many of them go unnoticed. If they lived in Indiana they'd be the shit and everybody would stare at them as they walked by. But here, no one does.

In Indiana, if you make eye contact with someone you both either nod, smile, or quietly say hello. In NYC no one does that. They just keep walking. And if you do happen to get any reaction from someone, they'll give you the "what the fuck you lookin' at" look. Great.

There's ALWAYS things to do. I love the theater district (I think that's what they call it) on and off Broadway. I went to see "American Idiot" and I loved it. At all hours of the day and night you see people walking places. Even on a Sunday. Where the hell could you be going at 11pm on Sunday night? Take yo ass to bed. But I guess the city never sleeps, better slip you an Ambien.

The high end retail stores aren't stores at all, they're show rooms. Or atleast they look that way. Everything is so carefully constructed like the clothes themselves. Smooth hardwood floors, glass doors, impeccably dressed employees, meticulously placed clothing, bags, and accessories. Oh, and don't forget about the doorman and the suited security standing around everywhere.

Junior's is an awesome restaurant. I've eaten breakfast there three out of the four days I've been in NYC. The French toast is my favorite. Never had better at any restaurant.

Generally, people dress better here than anywhere else I've ever been. And I'm not just talking suits. I, more so, mean the casual wear. They know how to use their scarves, jackets, the right jeans, the right sneakers, and hats. The women love their leggings and heels here, too.

It's not always easy to get a cab. It took me over half an hour last night. I'm just sayin'.

Hoosier Draft? I Think So

I’ve never been more excited for the NFL Draft than I am this year. This is the weekend where, for many players, life as they once knew it will end. Things will change for them – better for most. A new life, new opportunities, new pressures, new cities, and new temptations will be upon them. Speculations on potential picks are all around. Who will go where? How much money will he make?

Word is the St. Louis Rams haven’t confirmed that they’ll be taking Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, but it looks like that’s exactly what they’re going to do according to ESPN. Would I take him? Sure. Would I take Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh? Sure. The fact is you can’t go wrong with either pick. But, to be perfectly honest with you I’m not worried about that pick or any of the first ten picks.

My excitement over the NFL Draft this year comes, not from the tantalizing suspense of who will pick who (although, I do still love that aspect), but the fact that a good number of Hoosiers could be picked this year. My boys, my teammates, my friends. The guys I danced and sang with in my underwear with while in the locker room. The boys I talked to nearly everyday for 5 years. The boys who I bled, cried, and fought with through pain, death, heat, sweat, heartbreak, happiness, anxiousness, everything.

And the memories! Hell, me and Rodger used to make up dances and songs about training camp, the season, winter conditioning, whatever. I’ll always miss those days.

There’s a chance Rodger could be picked tonight. If so, he’ll be the first IU player taken in the first round since wide receiver Thomas Lewis in 1994. He’s been shooting up many scout’s and critic’s draft boards since November. The same goes for Jammie Kirlew, although he’ll likely be picked in the mid to late rounds. Then there’s Nick Polk, Greg Middleton, Ray Fisher, Matt Mayberry, Austin Thomas, D McCray and more. They’ve all got a chance!

No matter what happens this weekend I’m proud of all my boys and the memories we’ve made. It’s unreal to see them go through this process. Success will come to all of them in one way or another. I just want it to be in the way they want it. The NFL will come calling for them. I know they’re ready. I just hope the NFL is ready for all these Hoosiers.

This past weekend I attended a bachelor party I had long planned for a best friend of mine. It was a great time – dinner at Harry & Izzy’s, Jay-Z concert and afterparty, hotel, plus messing with the people working at the hotel front desk – but this isn’t about the party itself so much as it is about the documentation of the party.

You see, every New Year I tell myself I’m going to take more pictures, but its uncommon for me to get urge to want to have to stop the movement of life to a capture a moment. I’m all for pictures for memories, but the idea of stopping to tell everyone to pose for a camera bother me a little.

I had left my camera in my SUV at the beginning of the party by accident. When I asked the fellas if I should retrieve it, they said no. One guy told me bachelor parties were things of legend and were only to be talked about to a certain point. No man takes pictures at his bachelor party (unless, ofcourse, you don’t mind your soon-to-be wife and her girlfriends finding out about Brandy, the stripper).

When I do take pictures I want them I want them to capture people in the process of living. Those are the types of pictures I love most. Not when someone’s posing. I don’t always care for the classic “look at me” pictures. The last thing I need is a picture of some pretty young thing stopping to suck in her stomach, stick her butt out, lift her breasts, and give pouty lips. That shit ain’t real. Where are the pictures of her dancing, flirting, and chatting about her new Jimmy Choo’s?

My point is this: I’m down for posing for a few pictures here and there to show who I was with, but excuse me if I don’t want to stop a good time to pose for a picture every five minutes. I say document life and what happens around, not how well you can pose. Save it for your magazine photo shoot.

New Artist #4: J. Cole

If you’re a Jay-Z fan you know of J. Cole. You heard his verse on “A Star is Born” off of Jay’s Blueprint 3. You even hit rewind to hear his verse again. Why? The young North Carolina native is a definite star in the making and he did more than enhance Jay’s track, he blessed it.

Writing rhymes since age 12, Cole isn’t your average rapper. He attended St. John’s University on an academic scholarship, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. When he wasn’t studying he was fine-tuning his sound as a rapper. He later released his mixtape The Warm Up, giving fans a taste of a conscious, insightful rap style that will surely make him a star. He spit fire, Common-like bars on “Lights Please” saying,

Ain’t it shameful how niggas blame hoes for givin’ birth to a baby that took two to make? Coward nigga, you a fake. How you gon’ look in your son’s face and turn your back? Then go start another family dog, what type of shit is that?

Cole goes on to put his own touch on a classic with Jay-Z’s “Dead Presidents.” We should all take notice and believe in the youngster in 2010. After all, Cole told us, “Yeah, I’m focused man, I’ll let you muthafu**as soak it in.” Clap for ‘em.

New Artist #5: Nikki & Rich

I’m putting this group here for two reasons: They’re such Grammy-bate and they’re music is infectious and downright great. Why weren’t they higher on the list? They might go generally unheard of among the masses for most of the year and may not release a full album until next winter, if not 2011.

Nikki & Rich consist of singer/songwriter Nikki Leonti and producer Rich Skillz. Nikki is a former Christian Music singer. She released her first LP in 1998 titled, Shelter Me before releasing a self-titled album, and Postcards From Mixaco: A Dance Re-MIX Fiesta. She’s come a long way since those days.

Nikki & Rich’s sound is retro pop, doo wop, and R&B. Every bit of it is both soulful and satisfyingly wrenching. Judging from the few songs I’ve heard, you can’t help but smile, dance, or sing along. Nikki has garnered positive comparisons to Amy Winehouse and combines a strong, soulful voice with attractive looks.

Their music was featured on the last season of HBO’s Entourage and the new 90210. They’re beginning to create more buzz, as they held a private showcase for media and friends in New York City on February 9. After catching a glimpse of their live show and hearing a few of their tunes, there’s zero doubt in my mind that Nikki & Rich will be a promising new act in 2010.

New Artist #6: La Roux

I first heard La Roux last November while watching music videos on one of the numerous music channels via Comcast. It’s something I always enjoyed doing while chillin’ in my apartment – it’s how I discovered lots of new music. The song was “Bulletproof” and it didn’t sound like anything I had heard before. I actually described it in an earlier post.

The only reason I have this group slated at number six, and not higher, is because they’re not likely to get any Grammy love. Why? Probably because they’re from England and you hadn't heard of them before today. My guess is Elly Jackson (lead singer) and Ben Langmaid (synth player/producer) are out to change all that. Jackson’s voice is unique and described as “distinctively breathy and arobatic” by MTV. Their music is undeniably catchy and unlike anything you’ve heard.

They have a growing niche audience full of English electropop lovers, who in a previous life, would’ve been in love with David Bowie, Annie Lennox, and Madonna. But because those people are of this era they worship Lady Gaga, who has helped jolt the radio world into playing music that, three years ago, went unheard through the almighty FM waves. That’s where I hope La Roux will come in jamming on the paved roads Gaga has most recently recently made for them.

Their self-titled, debut album was released in June of last year and singles, “Bulletproof” and “In for the Kill” have won at the Studio8 International Music Awards, the iTunes 2009 UK Music Awards, and this year’s NME Awards. Now, it’s time for people in the States to take notice – or at least impress your friends with your extensive music knowledge beyond the main stream.

Last Thursday I attended the annual "Singles Party" hosted by Indianapolis Monthly at Nicky Blaine's Cocktail Lounge. I had a wonderful time, met some wonderful people. Even did some networking. I didn't stay the whole time, but I did manage to sit down for a drink and chat with a nice young lady.

As I pondered what drink I should try, she could tell I was quite perplexed and not a drinker - and she was right. I had no idea what to order. All I knew is the event was partially sponsored by Kettle One and their drinks were going for $7. But Kettle One just seems too distinguish-y, and ridiculously faux-manly. It tries too hard. When I think of Kettle One slender, well-bearded, white men, dressed in sleek, black Tom Ford suits with white shirts that have the top two buttons unbuttoned (I still got love for Tom Ford, though). I wanted something more laid-back but flashy. I guess that's why I had always ordered a Ciroc with any juice I thought tasted good. The young lady insisted I order a Ciroc because it was "good" - and that's exactly what I ordered. That shit was $10.50. I could've shot myself.

A friend and fellow intern of mine, Pamela, ordered a mysterious carmel colored drink with some cream on top. It looked delicious. I took it upon myself to have a sip. It was the best alcohol I've ever tasted - that may not be saying much, but whatever. She informed me it was a "White Russian." I would've ordered one if I hadn't already ordered a damn Ciroc (sorry, Diddy) and realized that I'd be paying $18 for parking that night. I learned my lesson that night: Ladies you don't know are terrible at suggesting drinks (duh), Ciroc is only "good" because it's Diddy's drink, and paying more than $10 for parking or a drink of any kind is just ridiculous.

The Band of Outsiders Spring/Summer 2010 Collection is tailored, hip, fun, and functional - kinda like the stars featured in the lookbook - Dave Franco ("Scrubs"), Donald Glover ("Community"), and Leslie Mann. All the images are in the form of Polaroids, which I love. I have actually been thinking about buying a Polaroid sometime this year to document my times and surroundings. It gives things a cool, laid-back, old-school feel to them. Band designer Scott Sternberg described his brand as, "like what your dad wore but reinterpreted for the future." If the future looks this cool in the sun. I may need to move to SoCal.

New Artist #7: Ke$ha

Ke$ha, 22, makes me think of that college girl who was at every party sloppily drunk off her ass while dancing the night away before hooking up with some random guy, and throwing up in the toilet while her friends hold her hair. The only thing is she’s somehow appealing enough to continue to be popular with guys and girls alike.

To me, she may be very different from that, but from the sound of her debut CD, Animal, it seems she’s trying to give off that vibe, that’s Ke$ha. She describes her fashion sense as “garbage-chic” and named Keith Richards as her fashion inspiration (Really?). Basically, she could care less what we all think.
Nevertheless, she is talented.

Born in Los Angeles, but growing up in Nashville, TN, she was taught to sing and write songs by her mother. You can hear some of that southern-ness in her voice throughout Animal.

She may not have the best voice, but she has a niche and there’s a definite place for her in music today – albeit the party scene. The thumping beats, auto-tune, and daring lyrics make you want to listen when no one is watching (unless you’re that party girl). I admit buying her CD and think it’s pretty good for what it is – a party CD. “Tik Tok” is infectious, “Take It Off” makes me want to fist pump like my name is JWow, and “Stephen” has one of my favorite openers of any song I’ve heard recently.

I expect Ke$ha to get even bigger as this year goes on. It won’t surprise me one bit if she takes home a Grammy next year. And even if she doesn’t, we know she’ll party her ass off regardless.

New Artist #8: Jason Derulo

I first ran across Jason Derulo a couple years ago while reading a feature story on Diddy. At the time Derulo was writing songs for Danity Kane, Donnie Klang, and Cassie.

Born Jason Desrouleaux, 20, (he changed the spelling for his stage name to make it easier to pronounce), the Miami native has been in song writing since he was 16. He released his debut single, “Whatcha Say” in August and the song became a smash, hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November. I know I couldn’t get the song out of my head for months.
While many listeners simply took to the song’s hook, Derulo’s voice sounds somewhat of a slightly deeper Jeremih and flows well over the Imogen Heap-sampled (“Hide and Seek”) track.

To be honest, I haven’t heard much else from him other than his next single, the guitar-infused, “In My Head.” Yet, I really like his voice and feel he has a serious chance to catch the hearts of both R&B and pop fans this year. His self-titled debut album on the Beluga Heights/Warner Music Group label drops March 2. I’m interested to see how he sells. My guess is he may start out slowly because “Whatcha Say” was released so long in advance and his second single isn’t close to that one. Nevertheless, I expect his sales to pick up with a third single next summer. Whatever happens, the kid’s got talent and I expect him to be up for plenty of hardware over the course of the next year.

New Artist #9: Dan Black

In 2009 I became more interested in music than ever before. New, different music from what I first began getting into in the mid to late ‘90’s. Now, I’m developing a “thing” for indie-rock, electronica and alternative music once again. My musical taste has expanded. That expansion brought me to Dan Black. With classic British-pop vocals and lyrics that read like poetry, Black is certain to leave his mark in the U.S. this year.

In 2008 Black released “HYPNTZ”, which is a mashup of Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella”. On the song he impressed critics with his hip-hop knowledge as he sang Biggie’s lyrics while keeping his own vocal melody. Black’s first real single, “Symphonies” was released as iTunes single of the week for the week of December 28, 2009. It’s a simple, lively, pop song with edge from the “Umbrella” beat. The single is off his album, “Un” released in the UK in 2008. The album is said to be smart and confident and garners influences from Jay-Z. Biggie, Prince, Beck and De La Soul to name a few.

Black received Justin Timberlake’s stamp of approval last summer and with his British, indie-rock, hip-hop, and pop sound there’s little doubt in my mind that UK’s Black will be making a big name for himself stateside.

NEW ARTIST #10: Big Sean

It wasn’t long ago when Sean Anderson worked as a telemarketer in Detroit making a measly $100 a week as a junior in high school. The rapper better known as Big Sean had bigger dreams, as telemarketing wasn’t the hustle he’d dreamed of. Luckily, one day a friend called him to tell him Kanye West was at the 102.7 FM radio station. In an effort to get signed, Sean rushed to the station and used his relationship with the staff to get close to Kanye. West denied him at first before telling him he had 16 seconds to spit. Sixteen seconds turned into 10 minutes.

"Kanye shook my hand and started walking away," Sean told MTV. "My friend was like, 'You gotta go for it.' So I tapped him on the shoulder and was like, 'I'm an aspiring MC. I do this show every Friday. Can I rap for you?' He was like, 'No. I gotta go.' I'm like, 'Man, please — you're my hero. Let me rap for you? Just let me spit for you.' "

Kanye let Sean spit as he walked out of the station. After a while a crowd had formed and Kanye was bobbing his head. "It was like out of the movies," Kanye told MTV. "I could hear his personality and character and style in it. He just walked up to me and said a rap and I said, 'I'mma sign you.' That's what happened and to this day Sean’s clear Midwest flow has skateboard kids and hip-hop heads alike bobbing their heads. Now signed to Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music, he’s set to release his debut album Finally Famous sometime this year. His persistence helped him find a new hustle. So much for that old telemarketing gig.

With the Grammy's airing this past weekend I felt it was only fitting for me to unveil my 10 favorite new artists who I'd like to see make it BIG in 2010. A couple of my picks are already big names, but have yet to reach the full potential of their young stardom - some haven't yet released an official album, and those who have haven't yet seen Grammy fame. I guess this is my toast to them and my way of saying, "These people are the shit. Now recognize." And they all should be recognized, because sooner or later you'll have their songs, outfits, and pictures stuck in your head if you don't already. When you see these artists run to download their music, upload their photos, peep their style, and look for their tours. I seriously doubt you'll be disappointed.

R&B singer Omarion will venture into the world of reality competition TV this winter as the new judge on America's Best Dance Crew. He'll be replacing former judge/choreographer Shane Sparks. The show had been looking for a replacement ever since Sparks was arrested December 9 on suspicion of child molestation charges.

This is the best choice ABDC could've made. Omarion is a fairly known name in the R&B world and we all know he certainly is one of the best dancers out there. Doing the show will help catapult him into becoming a bigger name in the music game and show off his personality as a judge and performer. I'm very happy to see Shane Sparks go. I hated most of his generalized opinions and terrible wardrobe. If I would've seen him wear one more Christian Audigier (Ed Hardy, Smet) designed shirt I would've thrown up. So, here's a toast to Omarion. May you be better than Sparks - which shouldn't be hard - in your judging, dancing, speaking, and your wardrobe. See his video below.

MacBook Pro
My best friend. My sidekick. My partner-in-crime. My MacBook Pro gets me through the long nights of school work, the long hours of boredom, the long delays in the airport, whatever the occasion. I got it over the summer between my senior year in high school and freshman year in college as a gift from my dad after I had hinted at it for about a month straight. Once you go Mac, you never go back.

HTC G1
My cellular phone of choice. It provides you with all the functions and capabilities of the iPhone on a much more user-friendly operating system. If it weren’t for the Twitter app ‘Twidroid’ (available for free download) I wouldn’t be able to make it through some of the most boring of days and events.

Levi 506's
The 506's are a newer style from Levi called the “skinny taper.” They offer the same low cut feel of the regular skinny jean but with a more defined taper at the bottom of the leg. This aspect makes them even more perfect for your favorite pair of Dunks, Sk8-Hi’s, Blazers, etc. These are probably my favorite and most comfortable pair of pants.

Ray Ban Wayfarers
They're usually not worn right these days but they’re a classic. I grew up seeing them on television and my dad used to own a pair back in the day. I always had my eyes set on having a pair. I saw everybody else wearing the imitations once I got older and I decided as soon as I had the money I was going to buy the authentics.

North Face Apex
I like this piece because it’s very versatile. You can wear it with jeans; add a little bit of class by fastening the Velcro at the wrists and accenting it with a watch for a party or get together. You can throw a graphic tee with an opened-zip hoodie underneath it to rock a sneakerhead look. Even wear it over a dress shirt and slacks in a business casual setting.

RVCA Trooper II Bag
It delivers style and durability. I happen to own a black RVCA Trooper II bag. It offers a super-dumbed down armed forces style that doesn’t scream at you, but shows a bit of personality. They offer the durability and longevity you’d expect from a backpack. I got mine right before the start of freshman year and it’s still going strong.

Vans x Starter snapback
I copped this little gem back home at MODA3 in Milwaukee. Mine reads “AUTHENTIC” on the front in large white letters, bordered by silver on a black snapback hat with a white enclosure on the back. Just like the Starter caps we used to rock as kids, it has the traditional Starter logo right above the enclosure on the back in white and shows the Vans logo in white on one side as well. Don’t forget the green under the brim. It matches pretty much anything.

Playcloths beanie
I don’t have an epic collection of hats and beanies, but the ones I do rock with are definitely dope. It’s a more recent purchase I made for the cold, courtesy of Dope Couture. Sometimes I’ll wear it down over my ears or and other times wear it on the back of my head for style. When I pull it down over my ears and throw the Wayfarers on it has me feeling like I’m Pharrell or Kid Cudi.

Dope Couture x Jetsetters tee
If you’re a streetwear-head it’s about time you became acquainted with Dope Couture. It’s owned and operated by former IU student, Matt Fields out of the boutique in Bloomington and lives up to its name. Last year Dope featured a capsule collection highlighting the Jetsons in a line dubbed “Jetsetters,” picturing the classic cartoon family members with a streetwear/high fashion twist to their attire. It’s a killer, so rock it wisely and don’t waste it.

Casio G-Shock
Some say the G-Shock is played out, but those are only people whose style in general is played out. Watches never really grow old, especially if it’s the right watch and you know how and when to wear it. I own a matte black Baby G that gets me through the times. Smaller than most of the other G-Shocks, the Baby G doesn’t draw massive attention, doesn’t feel large or clanky on your wrist, and delivers both efficiency and style.

V Magazine's "Size Issue" hits newsstands today! I know there's been other size issues done by other magazines but this one is truly ground-breaking. It's a double cover issue with Dakota Fanning on one cover and "Precious" star Gaourey Sidibe on the other. In the pictures below models Crystal Renn (right) and Jacquelyn Jablonski (left) pose side by side in the same looks and poses. These photos are just a taste of what of what the issue has to offer with spreads shot by none other than Karl Lagerfeld and Terry Richardson among others. The issue is out to prove "fashion can flatter any figure." I'm hoping to pick up this issue today or this weekend.

Pepper, Vodka, and Black Fleece Cologne.

Came across this while combing GQ for hair references (more on this later). Now, I definitely don't need anymore parfum (it's French and stands for both cologne and perfume), but I love Thom Browne and I love his guest line Black Fleece for Brooks Brothers. Therefore, it's only natural that I would want to smell like him - or, um, you know what I mean. According to Browne the cologne is "evocative of that man sitting in a library or parlor, smoking and drinking whiskey." I'm not a drinker, nor do I sit in parlors, but I do like library's. GQ editors disagreed saying it gave off a hint of pepper and if the man wearing this scent he's drinking he's "sipping a vodka-and-grapefruit Greyhound: Sharp notes of the citrus fruit abound, with a not unwelcome edge of ginger." Sounds fine to me! Unfortunately, at $125 a bottle it doesn't look like I'll be smelling of pepper or drinking a vodka-and-grapefruit Greyhound anytime soon. I guess I'll stick to my I Am King cologne and Ciroc vodka for now.

My Indianapolis Monthly Internship Begins

I started my new internship with Indianapolis Monthly magazine on Monday of this week. Today will be day four of my five months here in Indy. The first day didn't consist of much, as many of the editors were either very busy or had little to do. It didn't bother me much because it allowed all of the new interns to sit down and meet each other.

I'm one of the only male interns here, which I hear is typical. With that being said, the guys who are here are really cool. The female interns are nice because they offer different perspectives. They're fun, smart and cute. Oh, and they're hard-working journalists, too.

It's only been three full days and I've already set up four written stories (three of them due next week), which I'm very excited about. The first is a Q&A on Matt Fields, the owner and designer for DOPE Couture, a streetwear clothing line based out of Bloomington, but the guy is from Indy and his clothes are nationwide. The kicker: he's hosting the Jay-Z after party on March 20.

The second story due next week is a Q&A for our annual remodeling section in our March issue. This one might not be as exciting as the DOPE Couture story but it's cool.

The third is a simple thing for the March News and Notes section.

The fourth is pretty cool because I have to track down Roselvelt Colvin, who played in the NFL a long time for the Bears and Patriots, where he won some super Bowl rings. Turns out, he's from Indy and has moved back here to live out his post-career. That story is due in early February. should be fun. I'll keep you updated.

I love the internship so far. I plan to attack everyday with passion and effort. That way I'll be successful and have fun at the same time.

The Coldest Story Ever Told...Kanye Drops His VH1 DVD/CD

Kanye West's VH1 "Storytellers" DVD/CD finally dropped today...and I won't be buying it because I'm broke at the moment. But as soon as I come into some dough I'm gonna cop it.

The concert was originally filmed in February in Los Angeles, where he performed both old and new hits before giving their back stories. The DVD features three performances that were not originally broadcast: "Street Lights," "Paranoid" and "Homecoming" in addition to a Q&A session with West. The CD features the live audio version of the concert. The track list is below.

Video: Jay-Z x Swizz Beats - "On to the Next One"

While celebrating the New Year last night at Calhoun Street Soups, Salads and Spirits I saw the debut of Jay-Z's video for "On to the Next One" featuring Swizz Beats. The video blew my mind and I couldn't even hear it! The visual aspects of the video were enough to amaze me. I dare another artist to make a better video than this one in 2010. Now, ain't that something? The year's best video probably will have been shown on the first day. That's why Jay-Z is the best. He continues to change the game of hip-hop.

The video, directed by Anthony Mandler, comes on the heels of Jay-Z's "Young Forever" video released on the web last week (also directed by Mandler). The video is futuristic, dark, edgy and chic all at the same time. It's quite avant garde for hip-hop and looks like something Lady Gaga would do - perfect for the New Year. I love this video...and I want the jacket Jay-Z has on in it.

On December 19 I graduated. It kind of snuck up on me, just like pretty much everything else in the last six months. My mind spent the majority of my final college semester in the skies dreaming of my future and what I’d become. I dreamed of where I’d work and when it would happen. I dreamed of one day being like Diddy, Jay-Z or Kanye West, only in the journalism and fashion game instead of in the base of music. I want to be like them in terms of my hustle and work ethic. I want to conquer more than just one, two, or even three things. Print is just the beginning. I want to be big in radio and TV. Fashion is a love of mine and I want to see how far I can go there. My own line? Who knows? I at least want to become a stylist. I have a love for music, too. All music. I would like to get into some songwriting, as I can’t sing, rap or play any instruments.

This is my new beginning. I’m entering 2010 a confident man. I’m ready to grind and work harder than I ever have before. I have great things happening right now and things look bright for the future. I’m getting ready to intern at Indianapolis Monthly and am setting myself up to earn a 6-month paid internship with Men’s Health agazine. I’m currently freelance writer for MH.

To keep this short, let’s just say I’m on my way to greatness. I can feel it. But this isn’t on any conceded tip. I’m going to put in the hours, ask for help, learn every day and put my talents on display. If I get knocked down you can bet I’m going to get up and come back stronger. Smarter. Better. Faster. Stronger. That’s me in 2010.

The Doggfather is back on the scene with a new song, and this one actually has some bite to it. What better way to return than with a sample of an old school jam and a video of a good 'ol undergound dance battle. The video features America's Best Dance Crew Season 3 winners Quest Crew, actor/singer/funnyman Jamie Foxx and professional skateboarder Terry Kennedy.

The song features an old school sample from Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock's "It Takes Two" and is a decent track for Snoop to flow over. "I Wanna Rock" is the first single off his tenth album, "Malice N' Wonderland" due out December 8.

My Black (But Pleasant) Friday

Allow me to rewind back to Black Friday. It was a great day for me, not because I was able to capitalize on some great deals (I only scored one), but just because the main objective of the day was shopping. People line up at 4am just to catch the best deals and people storm department stores like there's no tomorrow. I actually had a friend who asked me to shop with her at 4:30am (at first, I agreed to, but then wised up). While many people may dread a day like this, I thoroughly enjoyed it. For one, I'm a people-watcher. I like to see what people do, what they wear, how they act, what they look like, etc. Secondly, I just love to shop and any excuse to ad new duds to my closet is cool with me.

I didn't go overboard on this day, as I am now constantly looking for quality, not quantity. I bought clothes from two of my favorite stores. Two sweaters from the Gap (they were buy one, get one free) and a nice, slim monochromatic-schemed blazer from H&M. It's one of my best buys of the year. I've displayed them below.

I've never seen Gossip Girl. Nor am I a girl who gossips. Nevertheless, I've found Leighton Meester to be unavoidable. Her look is both sexy and relaxed and on top of that she's said to be a "guy's girl" by one of her Gossip co-stars, Chase Crawford. In addtion to acting she's got an album set to be released in January 2010. Her first single, "Somebody to Love" features Robin
Thicke and yes, she's that girl on Cobra Starship's "Girl Girls Go Bad". Very fitting since on Gossip, the 23 year-old Meester plays Blair Waldorf, a ball of bitchiness, predominance and sensitivity - nothing like Meester. "Blair is so controlling and such a worrier; Leighton is relaxed," says co-star Ed Westwick to GQ. That's too bad, as this leaves Meester's fans with that much less to gossip about. Diddy has released his second single off his upcoming album Last Train to Paris titled, "Love Come Down" as a part of his new trio, Dirty Money. Riding with Diddy are Dawn Richard of the now defunct Danity Kane and songwriter Kalenna Harper. The performance-focused video shows Diddy dancing - alot, which you'll either love or hate. Either way, it's nice to see Diddy grooving again. The track itself reminds me of old Bad Boy records fused with today's modern dance phase in hip-hop/R&B, as does the video. On most mornings I like to have my own Wake ‘n Watch session by turning to music video channels on my TV. The other day there was this infectious electronica, dance beat thumping from my TV speakers that I couldn’t ignore. After running from my bathroom to leap in front of the TV I saw a pale, boyish, European-looking girl singing with a stoic look on her face. Though, there was nothing stoic about her voice.

This girl was Elly Jackson, on half of European electropop duo La Roux (the other is synth player/producer Ben Langmaid). The group hails from Brixton, England and lists the likes of Annie Lennox, David Bowie, Madonna and Prince as influences.
Listening to the snippets of their self-titled debut album on iTunes reminded me of a high-sprung electro dance party (though, I’ve never been to one, but would love to go). I’m planning on buying it soon and finding out more about La Roux.

It features West drunk at a party, living the good life before stumbling around and finding himself in a situation he must rid himself of. In a sense he's fighting an inner demon he must kill. I don't want to give too much away before you watch, but the video may represent a true life metaphor for all of us.

Each of us sat in a Bedford, IN theater staring up at numerous alluring scenes of little miss Porter - played by Amber Heard - rolling around in her revealing nighties as she turned a blind eye to every clue signifying that her boyfriend’s stepfather wasn’t your ordinary home wrecker.

Hello everybody. It's been a while since I've really written anything on my blog. Well, enough of that. But as for my absence, I've been on my grind. Lately, I've been balancing on the edge of excitement, nervousness and anxiousness within my very own realm of inspiration from numerous outlets in efforts to go hard on a daily basis in trying to set myself up to begin my journalism career come January.

The process has just began in many ways, but it has already made me irritable on some days. I've been putting in late nights just reading up on different magazines, trying to become an expert in the fashion game, entertainment, music, art and culture. It's so important to me I'm willing to do almost whatever. Saving money has become more important than ever, only I can never give up my addiction for clothing. But I've even stepped back from that, too.

With only a couple months left in my entire organized athletic career the urge to break in the journalism game has become heightened. Everything in my head is contradicting as the time to make key life decisions draw near. I worry about what's going to happen, but I'm very confident in my abilities. I, sometimes feel like taking a break and just chillin', but then I think I should stay on my grind and even go harder. One minute I wanna write fashion, the next, music. No, wait. Entertainment. should I write tonight? Nah. But wait, I should write daily. What do I read tonight? A book? A magazine? Which magazine? What haven't I read? What can I learn?

That's just a small sample of my daily thought processes. I'm a scatter-brain at times. But I'm driven. I'm not an academic, but I can work in the journalism field. Put me in a class room and I'll probably give you a C. Put me in a newsroom and I'll flourish. That's just me. I have a lot to learn and I have to keep improving, but I think a part of achieving greatness is believing that you either are great, or will be soon. I know I will be.

I know I rambling but this is how I think. My mind moves like James Brown's music. It's like abstract art, controlled chaos. It's nothing for me to wonder to myself, "What the hell am I supposed to do?" I'm just all over the place. One minute I'm a bad mother (you know what) and the next I'm worried about what might happen to me. It's just my life right now, and I'm still blessed.

I hope you follow me. Like I said, I ramble. But it's me. I'll talk more about this soon.

Apparel Watch: Abercrombie & Fitch Noonmark Cardigan

This weekend I went window shopping at the mall to see what was new at Bloomington's College Mall (which usually isn't much). However, when I stopped into Abercrombie & Fitch to browse around I was pleasantly surprised. Within 10 seconds of my walking in the doorway I noticed a these fine wool cardigans draped on some of the mannequins. I went up to them to feel the fabric (wool), buttons and stitching and I was very impressed. It was fitted, the sleeves didn't appear or feel flimsy and the buttons weren't loose. Also, they're priced at $98, which isn't bad considering the quality you're getting. I asked about the cardigan so I could try it on, but apparently those were just for show on the mannequins. In order to cop one I'd have to go online, and I will...eventually. Below are the site details.

I find this Hot 97 Trey Songz interview to be very interesting, not only because Trey Songz is such a great R&B artist, but because I'm writing an album review for his latest release Ready, which was released Aug. 31. My article is due on Sunday and will run in the Weekend section of the Indiana Daily Student next Thursday. From first listen Ready is a very good CD.
